AI PCs: What They Are and Why Your Next Laptop May Have an NPU

Artificial intelligence is becoming a standard part of everyday computing, and that is changing the hardware inside modern laptops. One of the biggest developments is the arrival of the AI PC: a computer specifically designed to run artificial-intelligence workloads efficiently. Alongside the familiar CPU and GPU, many new computers now include another processor called an NPU, or Neural Processing Unit.

An NPU is a specialized processor designed for AI calculations. Instead of relying entirely on cloud servers or asking the CPU and GPU to handle every AI task, compatible applications can process certain functions directly on the computer. Microsoft says Copilot+ PCs include NPUs capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS) and can use them for features such as real-time translation, image generation and other on-device AI tasks.

For everyday users, this does not mean that conventional laptops are suddenly obsolete. It does mean that the NPU is becoming another specification worth considering when comparing new machines. Someone purchasing a laptop for several years of use may increasingly benefit from dedicated AI hardware as Windows and third-party applications continue adding locally processed AI features.

AI processing can also be useful because some workloads can remain on the computer rather than constantly being sent to a cloud service. Microsoft describes its Windows AI components as providing lower latency, reduced reliance on internet connectivity and opportunities to keep sensitive information on the device.

As AI becomes more integrated into productivity, communication and creative applications, terms such as NPU, TOPS and AI PC are likely to become as familiar to computer shoppers as RAM, SSD capacity and processor speed. Understanding these specifications can make it much easier to choose a laptop that is ready for the next generation of software.

The One-Cable Workspace: Why USB-C and Thunderbolt Are Changing the Modern Office

Laptop workstations once meant a desk covered with separate connections for power, monitors, networking, storage and accessories. USB-C and Thunderbolt docking stations are changing that. With compatible hardware, a laptop can connect to a complete desktop workspace through a single cable, creating a much cleaner and more flexible setup.

A docking station can connect external monitors, keyboards, mice, Ethernet, storage devices and other USB accessories while also supplying power to a compatible laptop. This is particularly valuable for offices where employees use laptops as their primary computers. A worker can arrive at the desk, connect one cable and begin using a full workstation almost immediately.

The latest generation, Thunderbolt 5, expands what this type of connection can handle. Intel specifies 80 Gbps of bidirectional bandwidth, with Bandwidth Boost capable of providing up to 120 Gbps for display-intensive applications. The technology is designed for high-resolution displays, docking stations, fast external storage and other demanding peripherals.

The docking-station market is consequently becoming more capable as well. Current Thunderbolt 5 docks can combine high-resolution monitor support, Ethernet, USB connections, memory-card readers, charging and storage expansion in one device. Some modern solutions are specifically designed to turn thin laptops with relatively few built-in ports into complete professional workstations.

However, not every USB-C port offers identical capabilities. Two ports can physically look the same while supporting different charging, display and data-transfer standards. Before purchasing a docking station, customers should confirm whether their laptop supports USB-C video output, USB4, Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 and determine how much power their computer requires.

Why OLED Monitors Are Becoming One of the Biggest Display Trends

Computer monitors have improved dramatically over the past several years, and OLED technology has become an increasingly important part of the monitor market. Once associated primarily with premium televisions and smartphones, OLED and QD-OLED displays are now widely represented in gaming monitors, high-end workstations and displays designed for creative professionals.

Unlike traditional LCD technology, OLED pixels produce their own light and can switch off individually. This enables extremely deep blacks and excellent contrast. ASUS notes that QD-OLED technology combines self-emissive OLED pixels with quantum dots, providing true blacks, a wide color gamut, strong viewing angles and extremely fast response times.

Gamers are one of the major audiences for OLED monitors because very fast pixel response times can produce exceptionally clear motion. Modern models are also available with increasingly high refresh rates and resolutions. At the same time, photographers, video editors and other creative professionals can benefit from OLED's contrast and color capabilities, making the technology relevant far beyond gaming.

The range of OLED monitor choices has also expanded considerably. Buyers can now find conventional 27-inch models, 4K displays and large ultrawide screens, with both QD-OLED and other OLED panel technologies available. Current 2026 monitor testing shows OLED represented across numerous price, size and performance categories rather than only the extreme premium end of the market.

OLED is not automatically necessary for every computer user. A quality IPS monitor remains an excellent choice for everyday office applications, browsing and standard productivity. But for users who prioritize contrast, gaming performance, entertainment or creative work, OLED has become an increasingly compelling option when choosing a new display.

Goodbye Passwords? Why Passkeys Are Becoming the New Way to Sign In

Passwords have been part of computing for decades, but they also create persistent security and usability problems. People forget them, reuse them across multiple websites or accidentally enter them into fraudulent websites. One of the technology industry's major alternatives is the passkey, which is designed to provide a simpler and more phishing-resistant way to sign in.

Instead of typing a traditional password, a passkey allows a person to approve a login using the same method used to unlock a trusted device. This might be a fingerprint, facial recognition, a PIN or a physical security key. Passkeys use cryptographic credentials associated with the website or application rather than relying on a reusable password that has to be transmitted and remembered.

For computer users, this means technologies already built into many modern laptops are becoming increasingly useful for online security. A fingerprint reader, facial-recognition camera or Windows Hello PIN can be used to approve compatible passkey sign-ins. Microsoft also supports storing passkeys locally with Windows Hello, on mobile devices, in compatible password managers or on physical security keys.

Passkeys are particularly significant because they are designed to resist common phishing attacks. The authentication credential is associated with the legitimate website or application, reducing the risk of a user accidentally handing over a password through a convincing fake login page. Google similarly describes passkeys as a more secure alternative to passwords and supports fingerprint, facial recognition and device screen locks for authentication.

Passwords are unlikely to disappear everywhere at once, but authentication is clearly moving toward a more passwordless future. As fingerprint readers, facial-recognition cameras and hardware security keys become increasingly common, understanding passkeys can help both consumers and businesses improve account security while making the everyday sign-in process easier.

Wi-Fi 7: Is It Time to Upgrade Your Wireless Network?

From cloud applications and video meetings to streaming, gaming and smart devices, modern homes and businesses are placing more pressure on their wireless networks than ever before. Wi-Fi 7 is the latest major generation of Wi-Fi technology, designed to increase network capacity while reducing latency and improving the reliability of compatible wireless connections.

One of its most important improvements is support for channels as wide as 320 MHz. Wi-Fi 7 also introduces Multi-Link Operation, or MLO, which allows compatible equipment to use multiple wireless links to improve throughput, latency and connection reliability. Intel also highlights 4K QAM and Multi-RU puncturing among the technologies incorporated into Wi-Fi 7.

These improvements become especially useful in environments with many connected devices. An office might simultaneously have laptops using cloud applications, employees attending video meetings, wireless printers communicating with the network and smartphones or tablets accessing the internet. Higher-capacity networking helps the wireless infrastructure handle these simultaneous demands more efficiently.

Upgrading to Wi-Fi 7 does not mean that every older device must immediately be replaced. Existing Wi-Fi equipment can still be useful, while newer Wi-Fi 7-capable laptops and devices can take advantage of additional features when paired with compatible networking equipment. For larger offices, Wi-Fi 7 access points and mesh systems are also appearing with centralized management and broader coverage options.

When purchasing a new router, access point or laptop, it is therefore worth checking which Wi-Fi generation the device supports. Customers planning to keep their equipment for several years may find Wi-Fi 7 particularly attractive as more devices begin supporting the standard.
