From cloud applications and video meetings to streaming, gaming and smart devices, modern homes and businesses are placing more pressure on their wireless networks than ever before. Wi-Fi 7 is the latest major generation of Wi-Fi technology, designed to increase network capacity while reducing latency and improving the reliability of compatible wireless connections.
One of its most important improvements is support for channels as wide as 320 MHz. Wi-Fi 7 also introduces Multi-Link Operation, or MLO, which allows compatible equipment to use multiple wireless links to improve throughput, latency and connection reliability. Intel also highlights 4K QAM and Multi-RU puncturing among the technologies incorporated into Wi-Fi 7.
These improvements become especially useful in environments with many connected devices. An office might simultaneously have laptops using cloud applications, employees attending video meetings, wireless printers communicating with the network and smartphones or tablets accessing the internet. Higher-capacity networking helps the wireless infrastructure handle these simultaneous demands more efficiently.
Upgrading to Wi-Fi 7 does not mean that every older device must immediately be replaced. Existing Wi-Fi equipment can still be useful, while newer Wi-Fi 7-capable laptops and devices can take advantage of additional features when paired with compatible networking equipment. For larger offices, Wi-Fi 7 access points and mesh systems are also appearing with centralized management and broader coverage options.
When purchasing a new router, access point or laptop, it is therefore worth checking which Wi-Fi generation the device supports. Customers planning to keep their equipment for several years may find Wi-Fi 7 particularly attractive as more devices begin supporting the standard.
